Consultant Paediatrician - Whakatane Hospital
- Based at Whakatane Hospital
- Permanent, full-time position
- Make a real difference for tamariki and whānau in the Eastern Bay of Plenty
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role
Are you a General Paediatrician looking for rewarding work, a supportive team and a relaxed coastal lifestyle? Our Paediatric team at Whakatāne Hospital is seeking a General Paediatrician to join us in a permanent full-time capacity.
Whakatāne Hospital has a secondary paediatric unit, a four-bed neonatal unit and outpatient services. Our team cares for a population of around 50,000 people across a wide geographical area stretching towards the East Cape, Murupara and Te Puke, with outreach clinics in Te Kaha, Ōpōtiki, Tāneatua and Kawerau. You will share the after-hours on-call roster equally with four colleagues, covering general paediatrics and Level 2 neonates.
In this role you will:
- Provide high-quality inpatient, outpatient and outreach care for children and young people
- Work alongside a multidisciplinary Child Health Team and external partners, such as Oranga Tamariki and the Ministry of Education, to support a population health approach
- Support equity of access and outcomes for Māori tamariki, working with Te Pare o Toi (Māori Health Gains and Development) to build connections with hapū, iwi and Māori communities
- Teach and supervise resident medical officers, trainee interns, nursing and midwifery staff, medical students and GP trainees
- Have the opportunity to develop interests such as community paediatrics, leadership, RACP supervision, APLS instruction or research

About the Team/Service/Location
Situated in the sunny eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, the Bay of Plenty really is just that, offering vast golden sand beaches, bush clad mountains, lush farmlands and more. Its pleasant climate means that the area has become a favourite for holiday makers, retirees and those looking for a different lifestyle outside of the main cities.
You will be joining a group of highly motivated, multi-skilled General Paediatricians who are committed to working collegially with each other and with the wider Child Health Team to deliver responsive, high-quality care. The health needs of our communities are high, so the work is challenging and genuinely rewarding. We value the new ideas and approaches you will bring.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Hold FRACP (or be in the final stages of training), with completed training in general paediatrics
- Be eligible for specialist registration as a Paediatrician in New Zealand
- Be participating in the RACP Continuing Professional Development programme
- Be personable, collaborative and confident working in a multidisciplinary environment
