Lead the Development of a New Intensive Care Service at Waitākere Hospital

Fixed term 12 months position 0.4 FTE

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waitemata is seeking an experienced and visionary Intensive Care Senior Medical Officer (SMO) to lead the clinical development of the new Intensive Care Unit at Manaaki Hōhonu, Waitākere Hospital.

This is a rare opportunity to shape a new critical care service from the ground up and play a key leadership role in improving access to high-quality intensive care for the growing West Auckland community.

About the Opportunity

The new 6-bed Intensive Care Unit within Manaaki Hōhonu has been purpose-built to support the future delivery of critical care services at Waitākere Hospital, with capacity for future expansion. The unit forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen regional critical care capability and provide care closer to home for West Auckland patients.

As the inaugural clinical lead for the service, you will:

• Lead development and implementation of the ICU model of care.
• Establish clinical governance, policies, and operational frameworks.
• Build strong relationships across regional intensive care networks.
• Work closely with nursing, allied health, operational, and executive leaders.
• Support workforce planning, recruitment, and credentialing process

About You

You will be a vocationally registered Intensive Care Specialist with demonstrated experience in:

• Clinical leadership and service development.
• Establishing or transforming complex healthcare services.
• Quality and patient safety initiatives.
• Multidisciplinary team leadership.
• Strategic planning and stakeholder engagement.

You will bring a collaborative approach, a commitment to equity, and a passion for innovation in critical care delivery.
