About the Role
An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a Cardiothoracic Surgeon to join the cardiothoracic surgical department of one of New Zealands leading public hospitals.
You will join a highly skilled and collaborative team of 8 Cardiothoracic Surgeons and other Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Professionals; renowned for their commitment to excellence in patient care, innovation, and clinical practice.
Our Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit (CTSU) at Auckland City Hospital is the highest volume unit in New Zealand and Australasia. With approximately 1,000 coronary artery bypass operations and over 250 lung resections performed each year, alongside a comprehensive range of major thoracic procedures, this high-volume service delivers nearly half of New Zealands cardiothoracic surgical workload and is recognised as one of the two largest cardiothoracic programmes in Australasia.

About the Team/Service/ Location
Positioned in the centre of Auckland one of the worlds most liveable cities, the Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit at Auckland City Hospital is the largest Cardiac Surgery Centre in New Zealand providing the full range of cardiothoracic surgery for both ischemic and rheumatic heart disease, aortic surgery and lung cancer surgery.
The CTSU is part of the wider Cardiovascular Directorate which is home to the National Heart and Lung Transplant Service with a growing LVAD programme and national ECMO centre for which it has a retrieval service.
As New Zealands National Heart and Lung Transplant Unit and National ECMO Centre, the Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit (CTSU) provides highly specialised tertiary and quaternary services to patients across the country. The department manages approximately 1,300 admissions annually and operates a nationwide ECMO retrieval service. The service continues to expand with a recent introduction of programmes for mini mitral and PTE procedures.

About you
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Surgeon with both Cardiac and Thoracic surgery skills.
- You will have or be eligible for vocational registration with the NZ Medical Council in Cardiothoracic Surgery and ideally be a member of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
- Experience in heart and lung transplantation is desirable
