Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Southern provides a comprehensive range of Urology services across our main hospitals in Dunedin and Invercargill, together with outpatient clinics throughout the district. As this is a district-wide service, the successful candidate will also support Urology Service at Southland Hospital in Invercargill.

About the role

The Southern Urology Service, based at Dunedin Hospital, has an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Urologist to join our experienced team in a permanent 0.8–1.0 FTE position.

The service provides inpatient, outpatient, and community-based care to patients throughout the Southern district.

The role is based in Dunedin. Regular travel across Southern will be required to provide care at our secondary and rural facilities including Queenstown, Alexandra, Oamaru and Invercargill.

You will participate in a 1:4 on-call roster alongside our existing urologists and work closely with a senior Urology trainee, two non-training junior doctors, and an experienced and dedicated specialist Urology nursing team.

The Southern Urology Service has 24-hour interventional radiology support, access to comprehensive ICU and HDU facilities, and close links with the Oncology and Nephrology departments.

Health New Zealand Southern is linked closely with the University of Otago as the role includes teaching and training medical students. Academic FTE may also be available for the right candidate through a separate expression-of-interest process.

The Southern service has a clinical focus on urological oncology, endourology and stone disease, laparoscopic procedures, and the management of benign prostatic enlargement and lower urinary tract symptoms.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing high-quality, patient-centred care
• Sharing responsibility for the day-to-day management of the service and contributing to strategic planning
• Providing teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
• Actively participating in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activities
• Maintaining active participation in continuing medical education.

This is an exciting time to join Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora in Dunedin. The New Dunedin Hospital project is one of the largest healthcare investments in New Zealand and will transform health services for generations to come.

The new Outpatient Building is scheduled to open later this year, bringing together a wide range of specialist services in a modern, purpose-built facility, including urology outpatient clinics. Alongside this, construction is well underway on the state-of-the-art inpatient building, which is expected to open in 2031. Together, these facilities will provide modern clinical environments, enhanced patient experiences, and new opportunities for innovation, collaboration and service development.

Salary range

This position is covered by the applicable ASMS Collective Agreement. The salary range is between Step 1, currently NZD $198,386, and Step 15, currently NZD $282,645 per annum, pro rata.
