About the Role
The Nurse Practitioner – Child and Youth is an expert nursing role within Child Health, incorporating advanced clinical knowledge and skills. In this role, you will practise both independently and collaboratively to promote health, prevent disease, and diagnose, assess, and manage tamariki health needs.
Key responsibilities include providing care to tamariki with a focus on assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and whānau support using evidence‑based practice. You will work with complex patients to reduce disease progression, improve access to care, promote wellness, and prevent avoidable hospital admissions.
While practising autonomously, you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team and other providers including Māori health providers, Pacific health providers, district services, and primary care. You will also provide clinical leadership to support a highly skilled nursing workforce and contribute to a supportive and collegial team environment.
About the Team / Service / Location
This role is based within Child Health Services at Whanganui Hospital, working alongside a multidisciplinary team in a supportive environment.
The Child Health Service provides care to tamariki across the Whanganui rohe and includes the General Paediatric Service, Child Development Service, and Maternal Infant Child Adolescent Mental Health & Addiction Service. The service is committed to addressing health inequities for Māori and improving outcomes for tamariki and whānau.

About You
You will bring:
- Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate as a Nurse Practitioner, or be working towards this
- A minimum of 4 years' experience in the relevant area of practice
- Completion of an approved clinical Master's degree
- A strong commitment to ongoing learning and development
- Research capability including data analysis, critical appraisal, and clinical audit
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A passion for working with tamariki and their whānau
