Associate Director of Clinical Training
- Location: Te Toka Tumai Auckland | Auckland City Hospital
- Part-time, 0.2 FTE, senior medical education leadership opportunity (terms and conditions as per ASMS SECA)
- Shape and assure high-quality prevocational training for PGY1/PGY2 doctors, including IMGs and NZREX graduates
- Work alongside the Director of Clinical Training (DCT), Chief Medical Officer office, and CETU team at Auckland City Hospital

About the Role
This is a newly established opportunity within the Clinical Education and Training Unit (CETU). Reporting to the Director of Clinical Training (DCT), you will help oversee and strengthen the training, supervision, welfare, advocacy, and support of prevocational doctors (PGY1 and PGY2) working at Te Toka Tumai Auckland.
You will contribute to maintaining MCNZ training standards, supporting accreditation activity, and partnering with internal and external stakeholders to continuously improve the quality of the prevocational training experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting delivery and quality assurance of the prevocational medical education, training and supervision programme (aligned to MCNZ requirements)
- Contributing to MCNZ accreditation processes, including preparation of documentation and hosting accreditation visits
- Providing supervision and guidance to IMGs and NZREX doctors to support progression to general registration
- Supporting the Prevocational Educational Supervision (PES) function, including providing educational supervision (expected appointment as PES if not already)
- Contributing to remediation and support processes for trainee employment, training, wellbeing, or performance concerns (in partnership with relevant services)
- Teaching within the PGY1 and/or PGY2 programme from your area of specialty
- Building effective relationships across the Northern region and representing Te Toka Tumai at relevant regional and national committees related to prevocational doctor education and training

About you
You are a respected senior clinician who brings credibility, sound judgement, and a genuine commitment to developing and supporting prevocational doctors. You are confident operating in complex environments, can balance operational priorities with pastoral support, and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
Essential:
- MBChB (or equivalent)
- Full vocational registration and in good standing with the MCNZ
- Experience in clinical medicine and medical education/teaching
- Demonstrated ability to advocate for prevocational doctors and support trainee welfare
- An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ability to apply Te Tiriti principles meaningfully in practice
- Strong relationship management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across services and organisations
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a continuous improvement mindset
Desirable:
- Diploma (or other higher qualification) in teaching and/or medical education (or equivalent)
- Fellowship with a professional College
- Coaching/mentoring experience and leadership experience
- Knowledge of prevocational training and employment processes within Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora
- Experience contributing to service or committee roles across the wider Health NZ system
