A senior finance leadership opportunity shaping the future of healthcare in Aotearoa
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is leading one of the most significant public sector transformations in New Zealand. As the country's largest employer, we are responsible for delivering sustainable, equitable healthcare outcomes for more than five million New Zealanders.
We are seeking an accomplished senior finance leader to step into the role of Group Manager, Regional Finance — a critical leadership position with responsibility for financial performance, sustainability, and decision support across a region.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer Te Manawa Taki region, this role provides end‑to‑end leadership of regional finance operations within a highly complex, matrix-managed environment. You will be accountable for the integrity and timeliness of financial reporting, balance sheet and cashflow management, regional budgets and forecasts, and the provision of high-quality financial insight to senior leaders and clinical stakeholders.
A key focus of the role is leading the Regional Financial Sustainability Programme, translating strategy into delivery through cross‑functional leadership and value‑driven initiatives. You will work closely with District Finance teams and national finance functions to enable informed decision‑making, strengthen financial discipline, and improve long‑term sustainability.
This position will also deputise for the Regional CFO as required providing exposure at the highest levels of operational and executive decision‑making.
Your Background
This role will suit a seasoned finance executive who brings:
- Extensive senior financial leadership experience (typically 10+ years) within large, complex organisations
- Proven capability leading finance functions in matrix or multi‑entity environments
- Strong technical credibility across accounting, cost management, performance analytics and financial governance
- Demonstrated success partnering with senior operational and clinical leaders to influence outcomes
- Experience operating in environments subject to public, political or regulatory scrutiny
- Chartered Accountant status (or equivalent) and relevant post‑graduate qualifications
- A clear understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a commitment to equity and Pae Ora outcomes
Experience within healthcare or the public sector is advantageous but not essential for candidates with transferable scale and complexity.
Why This Role
This is a rare opportunity to operate at scale, influence regional and national outcomes, and contribute directly to the sustainability of New Zealand's health system. The scope of the role offers meaningful executive exposure, complex leadership challenges, and the ability to shape financial capability for the future.
