Te Whatu Ora Waitematā provides healthcare to the northern and western regions of Auckland, and is the largest health district by population in New Zealand. Our primary site is North Shore Hospital, located in the seaside suburb of Takapuna, less than 10 km from Aucklands city centre. We are a major metropolitan teaching hospital with an ANZCA-credentialled anaesthesia department, operating across two campuses with 28 operating rooms. Alongside strong clinical, academic, and teaching credentials, our department is recognised for its welcoming, collegial, and inclusive culture.
About the role
We provide anaesthesia services for a broad range of specialties, including colorectal, upper GI, liver resection, breast, complex endocrine, bariatric, adult and paediatric ORL, urology, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatric dental, ophthalmology, robotic surgery, and orthopaedics.
We are seeking suitable candidates for Anaesthesia Fellow posts for 12 months, commencing in the first week of February 2027 or August 2027. Positions may be structured as two 6-month roles. Expressions of interest for February/August 2028 are welcome. Other terms and start dates may be possible with further discussion.
Subspecialty fellowships offer just over 50% of clinical time within the chosen area. In addition, we offer Anaesthesia Fellowships with one day per week dedicated to an area of interest, including:
- Non-clinical: health IT / AI, medical education, sustainability
- Clinical: paediatric anaesthesia, ORL surgery, robotic surgery, colorectal surgery, hip & knee arthroplasty, ophthalmic anaesthesia, gynaecological surgery, acute pain.

Our fellowships are designed to provide focused subspecialty experience within a broader general clinical experience. Fellows participate in supervised and independent lists, gaining experience running the floor with senior support, triaging emergency cases, and supervising trainees/residents.
Each fellowship includes a portfolio project, with protected rostered non-clinical time to support this. Fellows are supported in developing both clinically and professionally, with the aim of achieving confident independent practice.
About the team and conditions:
You will join a department of approximately 70 specialist anaesthetists, supported by ANZCA trainees, perioperative, and pain nurses. Fellows work 4 weekdays, with the fifth day as a 'rostered day off'. Within the 4 days, you have a half-day of rostered administrative time towards non-clinical responsibilities. You will share evening, weekend, and public holiday shifts among fellows. Overnight duties may be introduced in the future as the service expands. The contract includes 6 weeks of annual leave, 2 weeks of continuing professional development (CPD) leave, and a $16,000 stipend towards CPD expenses.
About you:

These roles are suitable for final-phase trainees or those who have recently completed training. Applicants must have at least 4 years training in Anaesthesia.
Country-specific requirements that need to be met by the start date:
- ANZCA trainees must be eligible to commence the PF year
- Canadian and US applicants must have completed residency training
- UK applicants must have completed ST5, the FRCA final examination, and all Essential Units of Higher Level Training
- Completed SAT5, with eligibility to progress to SAT6, and the CAI final examination

At least one must be your current supervisor or clinical director; the remaining referees should be specialist anaesthetists who have worked with you in the past two years.
