About the Role
As a General Surgeon with Upper GI expertise, you will deliver high-quality elective and acute surgical care to our local community. Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing specialist assessment, diagnosis, and management of general surgical and upper gastrointestinal conditions
- Participating in a 1:4 acute on-call roster
- Contributing to elective operating lists and outpatient clinics
- Working collaboratively with theatre, anaesthetic, gastroenterology, radiology, and nursing teams to optimise patient care pathways
- Supporting quality improvement initiatives and contributing to departmental teaching and clinical governance
- Participating in shared decision-making and fostering strong relationships across the multidisciplinary team
- Training of registrars and medical students
About the Team/Service/ Location
Wairau Hospital provides a modern, well-resourced acute and elective surgical service to the Marlborough region. You will be part of a collegial group of four General Surgeons, each with complementary subspecialty skills, supported by experienced registrars, house officers, nurse specialists, and the wider perioperative team.
The service delivers a broad range of general surgical care, including acute abdominal surgery, endoscopy, day procedures, and elective operating. We pride ourselves on being collaborative, patient-centred, and committed to providing safe, sustainable care for our community.

About you
- Bring their medical expertise and experience to improve health in Marlborough region.
- Have experience in Upper Gastro-intestinal and endoscopy.
- Ability to work independently as a specialist in a provincial district.
- Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent.
- Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate with a vocational scope of General Surgery with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
