About the Role
As a Rural Hospital Medicine Specialist, you will work across both the Emergency Department and the Inpatient ward, and apply your broad, generalist knowledge in a rural setting to serve the Taupō community.
You will be an essential part of delivering quality, integrated care in this unique and rewarding environment.
If you have a background of working in smaller, less-resourced rural hospitals, you will appreciate the scope of practice and autonomy that this role offers. You will not be without support as Taupō has recently increased the junior doctor cohort to compliment the SMO team alongside a competent nursing and medical student team.
About the Team/Service/ Location
This community in the South Waikato region has a population of approximately 42,000.
It is a vital healthcare hub, featuring a 24-hour emergency department and a range of inpatient and outpatient services, including a maternity unit and community mental health care.

About you
As a Rural Hospital Medicine Specialist:
- You will be highly adaptable and experienced, thriving in a rural environment and comfortable applying a broad generalist knowledge base to diagnose and treat patients independently.
- You will be within 3 months of obtaining your Rural Hospital Medicine qualification and/or already hold this qualification
- You are eligible for Specialist Locum Tenens and/or Specialist Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
