About the Role
We are a team of talented and enthusiastic individuals looking for a Rural Medicine Specialist to join us in providing emergency and inpatient care to the Taumarunui community. In this role you will work with varied presentations in our emergency department and on the inpatient ward providing a high degree of emergency and ongoing care in an independent manner.
- Deliver proficient preventive, therapeutic and diagnostic interventions effectively.
- Perform procedural skills, both diagnostic and therapeutic in a proficient manner.
- Seek appropriate consultation from health professionals based at our tertiary hospital within the boundary of your expertise.
- Develop rapport, trust and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
Accurately extract and synthesise relevant information from patients, families and other professionals.

About our Rural Hospital
Taumarunui Hospital is a vital rural hospital, providing 24/7 emergency care to around 10,000 patients each year, supported by a 10-bed inpatient ward. High-acuity patients are transferred to Waikato Hospital via air and road retrieval services when specialist care is required. The hospital offers on-site laboratory and radiology services, visiting specialist outpatient clinics, an independent General Practice, and a two-bed primary birthing unit led by a dedicated midwifery team.
Working within the innovative Taumarunui Integrated Health Care model, developed in partnership with local community and primary care providers, the hospital is committed to delivering connected, patient-centred care. A growing range of nurse-led services further strengthens its ability to meet the evolving health needs of the community.

You'll manage a wide range of acute presentations while helping guide patients through assessment, treatment, transfer, or admission. You'll be joining a highly supportive senior medical team, with excellent mentoring and plentiful opportunities to develop emergency procedures skills and advance your career.
Senior Medical Officers are supported with up to two weeks of fully funded continuing medical education each year, along with six weeks of annual leave.

About You
Ideally we're looking for Rural Hospital Specialists or Emergency Medicine Physicians vocationally registered or eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
If you are not a fellow of Rural or Emergency Medicine but feel you have the experience and skills required, from working in a similar environment please apply and we can discuss suitability.
You will also have experience in, or passion for, providing quality care to our rural and disadvantaged communities.
