We are seeking Consultant Respiratory Physicians to join our supportive and progressive team in Whangārei, the gateway to New Zealand's stunning "winterless north".

This is an exciting opportunity to practise across a broad spectrum of respiratory and general medicine while contributing to the health and wellbeing of a diverse and growing population. You will join a collaborative multidisciplinary team committed to delivering equitable, high-quality healthcare and ongoing service development.

About the Role

As a Consultant Respiratory Physician, you will provide specialist respiratory services across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. You will work alongside experienced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Respiratory Physiologists and Technicians, Sleep Services, and Respiratory Physiotherapists to deliver integrated patient-centred care.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing specialist respiratory outpatient and inpatient care
• Supporting primary and community-based healthcare services
• Performing elective respiratory procedures including flexible bronchoscopy and linear EBUS
• Undertaking acute respiratory consultations and procedures
• Participating in service development, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary care initiatives
• Teaching and mentoring medical registrars and junior medical staff

While the primary focus is respiratory medicine, participation in general medicine activities may be required depending on experience and service needs. Participation in general medicine acute rounds will involve an on-call roster with a limited number of weekend commitments.

About the Service

Whangārei Hospital is the largest hospital in Northland and provides secondary care services to a population of more than 190,000 people across a region spanning 12,600 square kilometres. The hospital is supported by regional hospitals in Kaitaia, Kawakawa, Dargaville, and Rawene.

The Department of Medicine delivers acute inpatient care alongside outpatient, elective, and non-acute services throughout Northland.

Recent investments in Northland have delivered a new laboratory facility, modern endoscopy services, a cardiac catheterisation suite, and comprehensive support services including Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Oncology.

An exciting new hospital redevelopment programme is also underway, with commissioning planned for 2032.
