Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is looking for an experienced Principal Integration Engineer to provide technical leadership, architectural guidance, and engineering expertise across enterprise integration platforms and services.

The Role
As a Principal Integration Engineer, you'll play a key role in leading the design, development, and evolution of enterprise integration solutions across Health NZ's digital landscape.
This role is responsible for defining integration engineering standards, best practices, and architectural direction while supporting the delivery of secure, scalable, and reliable integration services. You'll work closely with engineering teams, architects, stakeholders, and delivery partners to drive innovation and technical excellence across complex environments.
This is a senior technical leadership role where you'll mentor engineers, contribute to strategic technical decisions, and help shape the future direction of integration engineering within Health NZ.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the design, development, and continuous improvement of enterprise integration solutions and API platforms
- Providing technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance across integration engineering teams
- Driving best practice across architecture, CI/CD, automation, security, and cloud-native engineering
- Collaborating with stakeholders across Digital Services to deliver scalable, secure, and reliable integration outcomes
About the team
This role sits within the Digital Applications & Products function as part of the wider Digital Services group at Health NZ.
The Integration Engineering team supports critical national systems and platforms that enable secure information exchange and interoperability across healthcare services throughout Aotearoa. The team focuses on delivering resilient, scalable, and modern integration capabilities that support better healthcare outcomes for New Zealand communities.
What you'll bring
You'll be a highly experienced integration engineering professional with strong technical leadership capability and a passion for building scalable, modern integration solutions within complex enterprise environments.
You'll bring deep expertise across cloud platforms, API development, automation, and integration architecture while also being able to mentor teams and influence technical direction across large organisations.
You will also bring:
- Minimum 10 years' experience in Integration Engineering or related technical roles
- Experience in senior or lead engineering positions within large and complex environments
- Strong expertise across cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS and modern integration technologies
- Advanced experience with APIs, CI/CD, containerisation, automation, and Infrastructure as Code
- Knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7 FHIR and DICOM
- Strong stakeholder engagement, communication, and technical leadership capability
