About the Role
We have a fixed-term parental leave 12-month opportunity available to join our Te Waipounamu regional team as a Health Promotion Advisor.
The primary purpose of a Health Promoter is to design, develop, enable and evaluate health promotion projects, strategies, policies, interventions and initiatives that address determinants of health and wellbeing – aligned with community and government priorities. The role also contributes knowledge, expertise and ideas to local, regional and national teams and programmes of work
The specific focus of this fixed-term role is open to being defined for the successful candidate. Priority areas we are particularly interested to hear about your skillset or interest in, include:
- Building connected communities & reducing social isolation
- Enabling and supporting civic participation for increased belonging and wellbeing
- Māori or Pacific Youth engagement
- CALD communities
- Disability community
About the Team/Service/ Location
The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
About you
You are an experienced Health Promoter and someone able to demonstrate mature communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write and present effectively and have strong facilitation skills. You will have strong established community connections in your focus area and will value strong internal and external relationships essential for achieving sustainable outcomes. You have experience in building strong connected communities and enabling outcomes collaboratively alongside communities and wider stakeholders. We want to hear from you about what connections, skills and passions you can bring on a determinant of health or for a particular community, that could be ably supported in a 12- month role.
- A tertiary qualification in public health, health promotion, social science, education, Māori studies, community development or a related field (desired)
- Previous experience in health promotion, community development or a related role
- Understanding of health promotion in the Aotearoa New Zealand context, including, Māori models of health, the Ottawa Charter and the determinants of health
- Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs towards achieving pae ora
- A deep understanding of the systems, structures, policies and legislations that can impact health
- Experience in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action
- Full New Zealand Drivers' License
- A good understanding of the ability to work in a culturally and ethically safe way with a range of communities and stakeholders
- Proven relationship management and influencing skills
- Professionalism, including effective inter-personal communication, teamwork, accountability, self-management, time and risk management
- With the support of Health NZ, you will proactively take care of your own health and safety, to ensure a safe and supportive work environment
