About the Role
Palmerston North Hospital offers the ideal opportunity to begin your anaesthetic career. No prior anaesthesia experience is required.
We provide an excellent learning environment that supports the development of confidence, independence, and technical skill in anaesthetic practice. As a teaching hospital, we deliver specialist services in Upper GI, ENT, Urology, and Oncology, alongside a broad obstetric and paediatric caseload, offering exposure to a wide range of complex surgeries.
Our department has a strong interest in difficult airway management, utilising innovative and advanced techniques. Regional anaesthesia is actively encouraged, with most consultants proficient in ultrasound‑guided nerve blocks.
Facilities include:
- Nine (9) operating theatres
- Two (2) procedure rooms
- One cardiac catheterisation laboratory
The Team
- Nine (9) anaesthesia registrars working on a shift roster
- Typically two introductory trainees who do not participate in the after‑hours roster until ANZCA training requirements are met
- 30 specialist anaesthetists forming a supportive, collegial department
- Regular departmental social events

Palmerston North Hospital is part of the Central New Zealand Anaesthesia Training Scheme. Successful applicants would typically complete their first two years of ANZCA Introductory and Basic Training in Palmerston North before rotating to Wellington hospitals. These first two years are structured to allow trainees to meet all Introductory and Basic Training requirements.

About you
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. (Check at www.mcnz.org.nz)
- Completed PGY2 year or equivalent.
- A strong interested and enthusiasm for Anaesthetics
